Manchester is a major centre of England's canal system. Built in the boom years of the Industrial Revolution, most of them within thirty years either side of 1800, they provided cheap bulk transport at a time when this was unknown. After the coming of the railways, most of them fell into disuse and became derelict. In the more enlightened times of the second half of the twentieth century, they were seen as a valuable recreational resource and major restoration schemes were undertaken, many still ongoing.
